AWS Security Audit: Fixed-Price, Fixed-Scope
A fixed-price AWS security audit by AWS-certified engineers: we review your accounts against the CIS AWS Foundations Benchmark and hand you a severity-ranked report with exact fixes, in about five business days.
An AWS security audit answers one question: if someone got a foothold in this account today, how far could they go? We review IAM, logging, storage, networking and encryption against the CIS AWS Foundations Benchmark and AWS’s own security guidance, then give you the findings ranked by real risk, each with the exact fix.
What our AWS security audit checks
- IAM: root account, MFA, wildcard policies, long-lived access keys, role trust policies
- AWS Organizations and service control policies
- CloudTrail, AWS Config and CloudWatch alarm coverage
- GuardDuty and AWS Security Hub status
- S3 Block Public Access, bucket policies and encryption
- KMS key policies and EBS, RDS and S3 encryption
- VPC design, security groups and public exposure
- EC2 instance metadata (IMDSv2) and patching posture
- Lambda, ECS and EKS permissions and secrets handling
- A prioritised report mapped to CIS controls
How the AWS security audit works
Scoping call (free)
A 20-minute call to agree which accounts and regions are in scope, what compliance targets you have (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR) and any off-limits systems. You receive a fixed-price quote in writing before any work starts.
Read-only access
You create a cross-account role with the AWS managed SecurityAudit and ViewOnlyAccess policies. We cannot change anything in your account, and you can revoke access the moment the audit ends.
Automated and manual review
We run open-source scanners such as Prowler to cover the CIS benchmark quickly, then review the results by hand. Scanners report what is misconfigured; an engineer decides what is actually exploitable in your setup.
Report and walkthrough
You receive an executive summary, a technical findings list ranked by severity, and step-by-step remediation for each finding. We walk your team through it on a call and answer questions.
Who needs an AWS security audit
Teams preparing for SOC 2 or ISO 27001, companies that grew fast and never revisited their IAM, startups answering a customer security questionnaire, and anyone who inherited an AWS account from a previous team or agency. If you cannot say today who has admin access to your AWS account, this is the right starting point.
What you receive from the AWS security audit
- Executive summary written for non-engineers and auditors
- Findings ranked critical, high, medium and low
- Exact remediation steps and, where useful, CLI or Terraform snippets
- Mapping of findings to CIS AWS Foundations Benchmark controls
- A 60-minute walkthrough call with the engineer who did the review
- A short list of the five fixes to do first
Why an AWS security audit comes before everything else
Most AWS incidents we read about are not exotic exploits. They are a public S3 bucket, an access key committed to a repository, an administrator without MFA, or a role that trusts far more than it should. AWS describes this as the shared responsibility model: AWS secures the cloud itself, and you are responsible for how you configure what you run in it. A security audit is the quickest way to find the configuration mistakes that fall on your side of that line, before you spend money on tools that assume the basics are in place.
What an AWS security audit is not
It is not a penetration test. An audit reviews configuration and permissions from the inside, with read-only access, and finds the weaknesses an attacker would use. A penetration test actively tries to exploit them. Most companies should audit first, fix the findings, and only then pay for a penetration test, otherwise the test spends its budget rediscovering the same misconfigurations. If you need the offensive side, see our AWS and Azure penetration testing. It is also not a compliance certification: we produce evidence and a gap list, and your auditor issues the attestation.
Our approach to AWS security audits
We review against the CIS AWS Foundations Benchmark because it is specific, widely recognised and easy for auditors to follow. Where the benchmark is silent, we use AWS’s own security best practices and Well-Architected security pillar. Every finding gets a severity based on how easily it can be exploited and what it exposes, not on a generic score. Findings that are noisy but harmless are listed separately, so your team does not waste a sprint on them.
How an AWS security audit differs from turning on Security Hub
AWS Security Hub, AWS Config and GuardDuty are valuable, and we check whether you have them switched on and wired to someone who will read the alerts. But they are detection tools: they produce findings, often hundreds, without telling you which three matter this week. An AWS security audit adds judgement. We read the findings in the context of how your accounts are actually used, drop the ones that do not apply, and tell you the order to fix the rest. Teams that already run Security Hub usually get the most out of the audit, because the raw material is there and only the prioritisation is missing.
What a finding looks like in the report
Each finding states what we found, where, why it matters in plain language, how severe it is, how to fix it, and how to confirm the fix worked. For example, an IAM role whose trust policy allows any principal in another account to assume it would be listed with the role name, the risk (anyone able to act in that account could act as this role), the severity, the corrected trust policy, and a command to verify the change. You should never have to ask what a finding means.
Single account or multi-account
A single AWS account audit covers one account across all regions in use. If you run AWS Organizations with several accounts, the audit also covers the organisation itself: service control policies, centralised logging, delegated administrators and how accounts are separated. Multi-account scope takes about ten business days. See how our fixed-price cloud security consulting quotes work for what each scope includes.
How we price the AWS security audit
We do not publish a price list, because the right price depends on scope: the number of AWS accounts, the regions and workloads in use, and whether you need findings mapped to SOC 2 or ISO 27001. After a free 20-minute scoping call you receive one written, fixed-price quote. You approve it before we start, and the price does not change if we find more than expected. A single-account audit typically takes about five business days and a multi-account audit about ten. Read how our fixed-price cloud security consulting quotes work.
Who does the work
The audit is done by our certified senior engineers (AWS Certified, Microsoft Certified and Licensed Ethical Hacker credentials across the team), not handed to a junior. The engineer who scopes your audit is the one who runs it and walks you through the report. Work is done remotely, under NDA on request.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AWS security audit?
An AWS security audit is a structured review of your AWS accounts for security misconfigurations, covering IAM, logging, storage, networking and encryption. It uses read-only access, compares your setup with the CIS AWS Foundations Benchmark and AWS best practice, and produces a ranked list of findings with fixes.
How much does an AWS security audit cost?
We quote every AWS security audit as one written, fixed price after a free scoping call, because the cost depends on the number of accounts, regions and workloads in scope. You approve the quote before work starts, and it does not change if we find more than expected.
How long does an AWS security audit take?
A single-account audit typically takes about five business days from the day we get read-only access. A multi-account audit typically takes about ten business days. The fixed quote states the timeline for your scope.
Do you need admin access to our AWS account?
No. We ask for a cross-account role with the AWS managed SecurityAudit and ViewOnlyAccess policies. That role is read-only for security and configuration metadata, we cannot change resources, and you can delete it the moment the audit is complete.
Is an AWS security audit the same as a penetration test?
No. An audit reviews configuration from the inside with read-only access. A penetration test attempts to exploit weaknesses from an attacker’s point of view. We recommend auditing and fixing first, then testing.
Will the audit make us SOC 2 or ISO 27001 compliant?
No audit can do that on its own. Our report gives you evidence and a prioritised gap list that maps to common controls, which shortens the preparation for your auditor. The certification itself is issued by an independent auditor.
Can you fix the issues you find?
Yes, if you want. The report is written so your own team can fix everything. If you would rather we do it, we scope remediation separately as its own fixed-price piece of work, so you decide after reading the findings.
What do we get at the end?
An executive summary, severity-ranked findings mapped to CIS controls, step-by-step remediation for each, a list of the five fixes to do first, and a 60-minute walkthrough call with the engineer who did the audit.
